A New International announce their second album, The Dark Carnival. A 17-song dark and deadly opus created as part of a magical theatrical spectacular. A tragi-comic pop-opera set in a graveyard, both above and below ground, in life and in a vividly imagined, where A New International have been starring live as the house band in hell!

The soundtrack has been written for and inspired by The Dark Carnival, created by Vanishing Point and A New International, co-produced by Vanishing Point and Citizens Theatre, in association with Dundee Rep Ensemble. The Dark Carnival have completed a critically acclaimed run of performances this spring at Glasgow’s Tramway and continue with shows at Traverse Theatre (Edinburgh) and Dundee Rep Theatre (Dundee).

Prodigious frontman, Biff Smith (Vox) is joined by, Caroline Evens (Violin), Craig Laurie (Drums), Mark McSwiggan (Guitar), Steph McGourty (Bass) and Jo Shaw (Piano) who make up the effervescent outfit and all met mainly on the pub circuit. They laboured under the banner of indie band before an epiphany that they had more in common with a political movement or a band of superheroes than something less grandiose.

‘Necropolitan’ introduced A New International back as their first single release following their debut album and the dark and elegantly histrionic piece thrust them back into the limelight with sonic bombast.

Title single, ‘Dark Carnival’ is an eerie yet cinematic instrumental throb. A Danse Macabre and hymn to hedonism; it’s full of mischief and exemplifies excellent music played by excellent musicians.

“The Dark Carnival is a riot in the underworld. One part dumb-rock headbang, one part klezmer knees-up and one part Oompah Loompah sing song” explains Biff Smith.

Released 26th April, the album release will be celebrated with a special live launch at Glasgow University Union Debating Chamber (GUU) on the same day.

A New international have also previously shared the stage with the likes of Emma Pollock, Kathryn Joseph, Belle and Sebastian, Christopher Brookmyre and more. They have also made live appearances at Latitude, Hidden Door and Indietracks. Their live collaboration with Vanishing Point has shown how versatile the outfit are and has introduced them to a diverse new audience.
